Beckmann steals Monza GP3 pole from Hubert

Trident’s David Beckmann has taken his second pole position in as many events in GP3, topping qualifying at Monza with a late effort in a frenetic session.

The German rose to the front of the order with a lap time of 1m37.959s with two minutes remaining in the 30-minute session to deny drivers’ championship leader Anthoine Hubert by 0.011 seconds.

Hubert had beaten Beckmann’s initial lap of 1m38.476s but pitted on his next lap, being unable to challenge his improvement.

Leonardo Pulcini completed a late lap to move up to third, with Juan Manuel Correa set to start alongside the Italian on the second row of the grid after claiming a career-best fourth.

Ferrari academy racer Giuliano Alesi finished fifth above fellow Scuderia protege Callum Ilott, and Ryan Tveter.

Sauber Formula 1 test driver Tatiana Calderon, Pedro Piquet and Niko Kari completed the top 10.

Force India F1 tester Nikita Mazepin looked set to claim pole after leading at the halfway point as a short period of rain hit the track, but conditions improved late on.

Both himself and team-mate Jake Hughes also pitted with around a minute remaining and qualified 11th and 12th.

Jannes Fittje completed a clean sweep of Jenzer drivers bettering their previous season results following Correa and Calderon’s placings, taking 13th in his third race weekend.

Before the session began, Calderon led a short 10-minute practice session which was held in place of the usual 45-minute version, setting a lap time of 1m40.045s.

This longer practice was cancelled due to morning rain conditions, and as a result, the racers set between 13 and 16 laps, almost two-thirds of the 22-lap race distance in qualifying, as only five or six tours of the circuit were made during the 10-minute spell.
