Armstrong understanding after contact with team-mate Zhou

Championship contender Marcus Armstrong was frustrated but understanding after team-mate Guanyu Zhou knocked him out of the final European Formula 3 race of the weekend at Misano.

Armstrong had been running fourth when Zhou locked up in treacherous conditions and collided with the Australian, taking them both out of the race.

Zhou has been given a five-place grid penalty for the opening race at the Nurburgring and apologised for the incident.

This is the second weekend in a row Armstrong has been knocked out of a race by a team-mate, having retired from race three at Silverstone after a collision with Mick Schumacher.

“Absolutely [it’s frustrating] but we’ll survive. We’ll always come back – it’s in our nature,” Armstrong told Autosport.

“I’m more disappointed by the fact that we weren’t fast enough to dominate – I didn’t have the same grip as Ralf [Aron, race winner].

“In terms of the accident, I completely understand it because these things happen, especially in these conditions.

“Joe [Zhou] means well, so there are no problems at all.”

The final race of the weekend in Italy took part in extreme wet conditions. The race was red flagged after a handful of safety car laps due to the weather and restarted under the safety car.

Zhou believes poor visibility caused by the spray in the wet helped cause the incident.

“The vision the whole race was pretty difficult and I got a huge hit from Enaam Ahmed in the first part of the race – luckily I was still going,” he said.

“At the restart there were so many cars, and some were going to my outside.

“I decided to take the inside line and I locked up – I’m sorry for the team for what happened, but everything is fine with them.”

Armstrong, who led the championship before the Silverstone weekend, is now third in the points order and 32 points behind leader Dan Ticktum.

Juri Vips, who picked up a victory and a second place finish in Italy, moves up to second in the championship standings.
