Scherer claims maiden European F3 pole

Fabio Scherer claimed his first European Formula 3 pole in the second qualifying of the weekend at Silverstone.

Scherer jumped to the top of the times late in the session with a lap time of 1m50.460s, 0.050s faster than Juri Vips, who he knocked off the top spot.

Mick Schumacher followed him over the line to take P2, just 0.001s faster than Vips.

Enaam Ahmed spent the first half of the session top of the order ahead of Dan TIcktum and Ben Hingley, but all three dropped down the timing screens as Prema joined the track.

Prema waited until the final third of qualifying to send their cars out, with Schumacher immediately jumping to the top of the times.

The times stayed close, with less than a tenth of a second separating the top six, before Vips put in his best lap of the session – 1m50.510s – which was more than two tenths of a second faster than Schumacher’s then best time.

Vips eventually dropped back to third, ahead of Ahmed.

Jonathan Aberdein took P5, ahead of race one pole sitter Sacha Fenestraz.

Championship leaders Marcus Armstrong and Dan Ticktum took seventh and eighth, with just 0.02s separating the pair.

Guanyu Zhou and Robert Schvartzman completed the top 10.
