ART Grand Prix’s GP3 drivers’ championship leader Anthoine Hubert has taken pole position for the Hungarian feature race at the Hungaroring.
Hubert set a time of 1m31.409s, the fastest set at the track with the Dallara GP3-16 machinery, to claim his second of 2018.
This extends his points lead to 10 over team-mate Callum Ilott.
The Frenchman was able to hold off from team-mate Nikita Mazepin who improved at the chequered flag to 0.075s seconds adrift of the top.
Mazepin was able to complete the whole of the session after a dramatic incident with Niko Kari in the first five of the 30-minute session.
Kari went wide across the kerbs between Turns 4 and 5 and made contact with the Russian when returning onto the track at the right-handed Turn 5.
The left-rear of Kari’s MP-Dallara collided with the front-right of Mazepin, resulting in Kari’s session coming to a spinning halt with severe damage.
Leonardo Pulcini finished third to deny an ART 1-2-3-4 with Jake Hughes and Ferrari academy driver Ilott behind the Italian.
Ryan Tveter claimed sixth above David Beckmann, who had his best qualifying result of the year in his first event with Trident having replaced Alessio Lorandi.
Dorian Boccolacci was the last driver in the 1m31s bracket, with Joey Mawson and Juan Manuel Correa completing the top 10.
Ferrari academy racer Giuliano Alesi was 11th, while his Trident team-mate Pedro Piquet was unable to improve from 13th.
Sauber Formula 1 test driver Tatiana Calderon took 15th.
Jannes Fittje, who took Beckmann’s space at the Jenzer Motorsport team, ended 17th on his qualifying debut.
Kari fell to 19th with his opening effort that was five seconds faster than Hughes’s early on.
Only 19 drivers competed as Devlin DeFrancesco withdrew from the weekend due to suffering from gastroenteritis.
