Toro Rosso technical boss James Key switches to McLaren

McLaren has signed Toro Rosso’s technical director James Key as part of the team’s management reshuffle.

The move comes after the Woking squad’s technical director Eric Boullier resigned earlier this month. McLaren’s chief technical officer (chassis), Tim Goss, left the team in April, and chief engineering officer Matt Morris has also confirmed he will be leaving.

Key, who has previously worked for Sauber, Force India, and Jordan, became Toro Rosso technical director in 2012.

The Brit joined the F1 paddock in 1998, where he worked as a data engineer at Jordan for several years before becoming Takuma Sato’s race engineer.

He remained at the team through its transition to Force India, before joining Sauber as technical director in 2010.

Key left Sauber in February 2012 before confirming his position at Toro Rosso seven months later.

It’s not known when Key will be free to start his new role at McLaren, with an official start date yet to be announced.
