Daruvala beats Armstrong to pole in Spa

Carlin’s Jehan Daruvala claims pole for the first European Formula 3 race of the weekend at Spa.

A last minute lap knocked championship leader Marcus Armstrong off provisional pole, with Daruvala’s 2m12.983s just 0.01s faster than Armstrong’s best time.

The first qualifying of the weekend had gotten off to a slow start, with the first times not coming in until the final six minutes of the 20 minute session.

Mick Schumacher took the early lead, ahead of Julian Hanses and Artem Petrov.

It wasn’t until the final three minutes that the front runners began to put in their competitive lap times, with Armstrong top of the order ahead of Guanyu Zhou, Robert Schvartzman, Ralf Aron, and Daruvala.

Daruvala jumped up to P2 with his penultimate time of the session before improving to P1 as he took the chequered flag.

Alex Palou took third, ahead of Zhou and Aron.

Shvartzman, Enaam Ahmed, Ben Hingeley, Juri Vips and Jonathan Aberdein complete the top 10.

After a strong start to the session, Schumacher dropped down to 17th as others improved.
