Di Grassi quickest in red flag riddled FP1

Lucas Di Grassi topped the times in a disrupted first free practice session ahead of the New York ePrix.

The Audi driver was the only man to set a time at full power, with his 1m13.566s putting him 0.350s ahead of the next quickest driver.

Two red flags disrupted running early in the session, with the second pausing action for an extended period of time.

The first came within the first 10 minutes when Nick Heidfeld ran into the wall after clipping a kerb and Audi’s Daniel Abt ran into the back of him. The pair blocked the road with a number of cars stopping on track behind them as Abt and Heidfeld attempted to untangle themselves.

Not long after the track turned green again, Jose Maria Lopez stopped at the entrance to the pit lane. Lopez had hit a kerb and broke the rear left suspension of his Dragon, but had managed to limp back to the pit lane before coming to a stop.

At the time, Oliver Turvey was top of the order, ahead of Maro Engel, Nelson Piquet, and Mitch Evans.

Lopez’s car was eventually cleared and the track turned green with just under 10 minutes on the clock, though the session was later extended by 10 minutes. The entire field was quick to get laps on the extended New York circuit – a slightly different track to the one that was used last season – and the times quickly tumbled.

Sebastien Buemi, Sam Bird, and Di Grassi swapped times at the top of the order before Di Grassi completed his 200kW lap.

Buemi took second ahead of Evans, Jean-Eric Vergne, and Daniel Abt.

Bird eventually took the chequered flag sixth, just 0.006s ahead of Lopez.

Turvey, Alex Lynn, and Andre Lotterer rounded out the top 10.
