Sebastien Buemi takes pole for the first New York ePrix while championship leader Jean-Eric Vergne had his lap times removed for power overuse.
Vergne was top of the order after the first two qualifying groups, but had all his lap times cancelled when it was deemed an updated code – introduced by Techeetah for reliability purposes – pushed him and team-mate Andre Lotterer over the max power usage.
Both Techeetahs will start from the back of the grid for the first race of the weekend, with Vergne just ahead of Lotterer.
The incident promoted Daniel Abt to the top of the order after the group stages, with Mitch Evans, Jerome d’Ambrosio, Buemi and Nico Prost joining him in the super pole shoot out.
A stunning lap from Buemi put him more than half a second ahead of Mitch Evans in second to secure his second pole of the season.
A mistake from Abt on his super pole run put him fifth on the grid, behind Jerome d’Ambrosio, who’s scruffy lap was only good enough for P4. Prost, in his first super pole since Canada last season, finished third.
Nelson Piquet Jnr narrowly missed out on the super pole shoot out, qualifying sixth ahead of Jose Maria Lopez, Maro Engel, Tom Dillmann and Nick Heidfeld.
Championship challenger Sam Bird could only qualify 14th, but puts himself five positions ahead of Vergne on the grid.
NIO’s Oliver Turvey was pulled out of qualifying after fracturing a bone in his left hand in a crash in FP2.
