Hubert takes first on-track GP3 victory in ART 1-2-3

Anthoine Hubert has retaken the lead of GP3’s drivers’ championship after claiming his first on-track victory in the category in the feature race at Silverstone.

Hubert, who was given victory after Dorian Boccolacci’s disqualification in France, led all 20 laps to win by 3.9 seconds above Force India Formula 1 tester team-mate Nikita Mazepin.

The Renault-affiliated driver now leads Ferrari academy racer Callum Ilott by six points after Ilott finished third.

Ryan Tveter claimed his best result of 2018 so far with fourth above Dorian Boccolacci and Leonardo Pulcini.

Pedro Piquet hung on for seventh despite damaging his front wing against the rear of Pulcini on the penultimate lap.

The left-hand side of the Brazilian’s wing was slanted towards the ground but remained on the car until the race ended.

Giuliano Alesi claimed eighth and sprint race pole position after a late overtake on Joey Mawson.

Ferrari-backed Alesi was slow away on the grid and fell as far down as 12th before moving forwards.

Despite being unable to deny Alesi, Mawson again put in a defensive performance for ninth.

The Australian was required to battle Jake Hughes for a large portion of the event before Hughes’s ART-Dallara came to a halt.

Alessio Lorandi stalled as the race began but recovered to take 10th above Niko Kari, who lost time after going over a kerb at the left-hander of Stowe when the front of his MP-Dallara jumped into the air.

The race was disrupted by two virtual safety-car and one full safety-car periods in the first quarter of the contest.

The safety car was needed when Sauber F1 test driver Tatiana Calderon stopped near the end of the Hangar Straight after previously colliding with Gabriel Aubry.

Calderon spun left across the track at the right-handed Woodcote corner after contact with the left-front of Aubry.

Frenchman Aubry’s race ended at the run-off area around the outside of the left-handed Copse turn, a reason for the second virtual stint.

The first was required after Juan Manuel Correa and Julien Falchero made contact at the right-handed Turn 1 at Abbey on the opening lap.

Both went three-wide with David Beckmann into the turn, with the German having the inside line before the front-left of Falchero’s Arden-Dallara collected the right-rear side of Correa’s Jenzer-run machine.
