Vettel takes pole in Canada

Sebastian Vettel secured pole for the Canadian Grand Prix while championship leader Lewis Hamilton could only manage fourth quickest.

The Ferrari appeared to have the pace throughout qualifying, with Vettel fastest in Q1 and second in Q2. He managed to set a 1m10.776s lap on his first run in the final stage of qualifying, before shaving off 0.012s in his final run.

Team-mate Kimi Raikkonen couldn’t join him on the front row of the grid after running wide at the second corner on his final lap and qualifying fifth.

Valtteri Bottas took second ahead of Max Verstappen and Lewis Hamilton, with Daniel Ricciardo qualifying sixth.

Red Bull have opted to mix up the tyre strategy for tomorrow’s race, with Verstappen and Ricciardo setting their Q2 times on hypersoft tyres. It means they will start the race on the softest available compound of tyres, while those around them start on the harder ultrasoft.

Nico Hulkenberg picked up best of the rest in P7, ahead of Esteban Ocon, Carlos Sainz, and Sergio Perez.

There was drama at the start of qualifying for Haas as smoke began to pour out of Romain Grosjean’s engine. It brought an end to the Frenchman’s qualifying before he’d left the pit lane and he starts tomorrow’s race from the back of the grid.

Team-mate Kevin Magnussen managed to qualify 11th, ahead of Brendon Hartley.

Charles Leclerc once again managed to put his Sauber into the top 15. He couldn’t make it to Q3 but did outqualify both McLaren’s. He starts P13, ahead of Fernando Alonso and Stoffel Vandoorne.

Pierre Gasly couldn’t make it out of Q1 and starts the Canadian GP 16th, ahead of Lance Stroll and Sergey Sirotkin.

Marcus Ericsson qualified 19th after hitting the wall at the start of Q1.
