Verstappen top third Canadian practice

Max Verstappen tops the times in the final free practice session ahead of qualifying for the Canadian Grand Prix.

The Red Bull driver jumped from sixth to first in the second half of the session, with a 1m11.599s time on the hypersoft compound of tyre.

Ferrari spent most of the session top of the order, with its drivers swapping fastest laps. Sebastian Vettel ended FP3 just 0.049s behind Verstappen, with Kimi Raikkonen 0.002s further back.

Mercedes, who arrived in Canada with few hypersoft tyres to spare, spent most of the session on the harder ultrasoft compound. Lewis Hamilton was able to challenge the Ferrari dominance, though he couldn’t quite take the top spot on the harder tyres.

Neither Mercedes found the improvements the team was hoping for when they strapped on the hypersofts, with Hamilton taking fourth fastest and Valtteri Bottas sixth, behind Daniel Ricciardo.

Sergio Perez picked up best of the rest in seventh, ahead of Nico Hulkenberg, Romain Grosjean, and Stoffel Vandoorne.

With Toro Rosso receiving its first Honda in-season upgrade in Canada, a repeat of the problem McLaren had seen occurred and the team appeared to struggle with cooling problems. Even so, Brendon Hartley was able to take 12th quickest, behind Esteban Ocon, while Pierre Gasly finished P15.

Fernando Alonso and Carlos Sainz took 13th and 14th.

Charles Leclerc put his Sauber P16, ahead of Kevin Magnussen, Sergey Sirotkin, Marcus Ericsson, and Lance Stroll.
