Verstappen fastest once again in Canada

Max Verstappen has followed opening practice pace by going quickest once more in the second practice session for the Canadian Grand Prix.

The Dutchman recorded a 1m12.198s benchmark during a trouble-free session. Verstappen’s team-mate, Daniel Ricciardo had a much more troubled afternoon, spending the majority of the session in the garage with electronic issues. He managed to recover towards the end, finishing in third position.

Mercedes had another strong session but continued to avoid the hypersoft tyre. Lewis Hamilton had the upper hand over Valtteri Bottas but both drivers faired well on the ultrasoft and supersoft tyres finishing fourth and sixth respectively.

The Ferrari of Kimi Raikkonen was strong on the hypersoft tyres, finishing in second and only a tenth adrift of Verstappen. Team-mate Sebastian Vettel was fifth.

Vettel however, had much less track time after a lengthy set-up change meant that he spent much of the first half of the session in the garage.

Carlos Sainz and Stoffel Vandoorne both hit the wall during the session. Sainz spun backwards into the wall on the exit of Turn 7, damaging his floor and diffuser. Vandoorne damaged his right rear after colliding with the wall on the exit of Turn 9. Both drivers’ sessions ended as a result of the respective damage.

Romain Grosjean was best of the rest finishing in seventh place. However, there was little splitting Grosjean from the Force Indias of Ocon and Perez who finished in eighth and ninth respectively.

Fernando Alonso rounded out the top 10, showing good pace on the ultrasoft tyres while Charles Leclerc finished in 11th with another strong performance.

Williams struggled once more, with Lance Stroll and Sergey Sirotkin in 19th and 20th respectively.

Stroll was instructed by his engineer to slow down on the entry to the final chicane after ‘nearly crashing’ in a similar way to his incident in first practice.

Toro Rosso driver Pierre Gasly finished in 17th and over half a second behind team-mate Brendon Hartley who finished 12th.

Kevin Magnussen ended in 13th with Nico Hulkenberg just behind in 14th. Marcus Ericsson finished in 15th.
