Ricciardo tops timesheet in Red Bull FP1 one-two
Daniel Ricciardo has gone fastest in first practice of the 2018 Formula 1 Monaco Grand Prix, heading up a Red Bull one-two.
Ricciardo and team-mate Max Verstappen traded fastest lap times for much of their early run on the supersoft tyres.
Verstappen was looking to be the one to beat as the first man to get below the 1m 13s barrier, but a trip down the escape road at Sainte Devote an hour into the session resulted in a flat spot and he did not appear on track again until the final minutes.
This allowed Ricciardo’s leaderboard-topping time of 1m 12.1s to go unchallenged.
Lewis Hamilton remained in the mix with a time less than four tenths off the pace, and after a spell at the top of the timesheet and he finished the session third fastest.
The Ferrari’s of Sebastian Vettel and Kimi Raikkonen were fourth and fifth, with sixth going to Carlos Sainz.
Valtteri Bottas could only manage seventh and was 1.376 seconds off the pace despite matching his team-mate’s times towards the beginning of the session.
Sergio Perez was eighth with Romain Grosjean powering his way up to ninth after a lengthy spell in the garage.
Sergey Sirotkin rounded out the top-ten for Williams, after sitting as high as seventh and best of the rest earlier in the session.
Fernando Alonso finished in 17th after a brake-by-wire issue severely limited his track time.
