Formula E’s fifth season will start in Saudi Arabia this December after a 10-year agreement was finalised for the event.
It will be the first time FE has raced in the Middle East with the event set to be hosted in Riyadh, the capital city of Saudi Arabia.
Despite confirming that the ePrix, which will be the first event to feature the brand new Gen2 cars, will be held in December, a detailed calendar won’t be published until it has been ratified by the World Motorsport Council.
“Bringing racing to Riyadh for the first round of the new season is the perfect setting for the next phase of the ABB FIA Formula E Championship,” said FE CEO Alejandro Agag about the announcement.
“An exciting and vibrant country that is focussing on its future, Saudi Arabia will be the ideal venue to mark the competitive debut of the next generation Formula E cars.
“Most countries are now looking to Formula E, especially Saudi Arabia which is concentrating on the development of new technologies, renewable energies and electric vehicles.
“Many other sports are already increasing their presence in Saudi Arabia and we’re proud that they’ve chosen Formula E over other categories in racing.”
The ten-year deal for a race in Riyadh aligns with Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030 plan to help the country diversify its economy.
