Zhou wins Formula 3 season opener

Guanyu Zhou took victory in a safety car disrupted opening race of the 2018 European Formula 3 championship.

The Prema driver took the race lead after passing pole-sitter Dan Ticktum off the line. Ticktum forced Zhou to defend hard, but came under attack from Ralf Aron later in the race.

Aron passed Ticktum on the restart after the first safety car of the weekend, brought out when Ben Hingley stopped on track.

Ticktum tried to fight back and launched a strong attack in the closing stages of the race, only to be stopped when the safety car was once more brought out when Keyvan Soorie Andres put his Van Amersfoort run car into the wall.

The track turned green again with three minutes left on the clock. Ticktum switched between defending from Sacha Fenestraz and trying to attack Aron for second.

At the front of the field, Zhou built a relatively comfortable gap to the battle for second, finishing half a second ahead of Aron.

Ticktum finished third, followed by top rookie Sacha Fenestraz.

After starting ninth, Marcus Armstrong shot up to sixth on the opening lap. He picked up another position when Alex Palou fell backwards, finishing fifth ahead of Enaam Ahmed and Palou.

Robert Shwartzman, Marino Sato, and Juri Vips completed the top 10.
