The Renault Sport Academy driver jumped to the top of the times at the end of the first part of qualifying, his 1m23.620s lap just 0.003s faster than Enaam Ahmed.
A number of drivers were caught out in the wet conditions, including Artem Petrov, who stopped on track early in the session.

Ben Hingley spent most of the session top of group one but dropped down to third, ahead of Jehan Daruvala and Jonathan Aberdein.
The rain returned for the start of the second group, putting the second half of the field at a disadvantage.
Alex Palou topped the group early on, only to be knocked down the order by Dan Ticktum later in the session. But the Hitech GP driver returned to the top of the order with his final lap, a 1m25.104s lap enough to put him on the front row of the grid.
Fabio Scherer finished second in the group ahead of Marcus Armstrong and Julian Hanses.
Ticktum dropped back to fifth in the group after running up the escape road on his final flying lap, putting him 10th on the grid for race two.
