Dan Ticktum claimed pole position for the first race of the 2018 Formula 3 European Champion in Pau, beating Guan Yu Zhou’s time by 0.009 seconds.
The Motopark driver left it late in the second group during qualifying to set a lap time of 1m10.013s, which narrowly beat the time set by Zhou in the first qualifying session.
Prema’s Zhou was the quickest driver during his qualifying session, beating his team-mate Ralf Aron by 0.039s
Aron will be joined on the second row of the grid by Ferdinand Habsburg in third, who wasn’t able to improve on the time he set earlier on in the second qualifying group.
Robert Shwartzman will start the race from fifth position, being joined on the third row of the grid by Habsburg’s Carlin team-mate Sacha Fenestraz.
Alex Palou was the highest placed Hitech driver after qualifying ended in seventh position overall, with Carlin’s Jehan Daruvala ending up in eighth place.
Palou’s team-mate Enaam Ahmed will start behind him in ninth alongside Prema’s Marcus Armstrong in 10th.
Motopark’s Marino Sato and Fabio Scherer will both start on the sixth row of the grid in 11th and 12th after both drivers were sixth fastest in their respective qualifying groups.
Mick Schumacher, who was at the top of the timesheets during multiple testing session earlier in the year, crashed during group one at the Foch chicane, which Prema believe was caused by a broken suspension.
He finished up ninth in his group and will start the first race of the season in 18th place alongside Carlin’s Devlin DeFrancesco/
