Will Palmer will race for MP Motorsport in the 2018 GP3 season, joining Dorian Boccolacci and Niko Kari at the Dutch outfit.
The 2015 McLaren Autosport BRDC Award winner makes the step up from Formula Renault 2.0 Eurocup in which he finished second in the drivers’ championship with three wins in 2017.
He also gained experience of the Dallara GP3-16 chassis in the final pre-season tests in April, claiming a best of fifth fastest on the morning of the opening day.
“The Barcelona test gave me the confidence that together we can get the job done, and having two very strong experienced team-mates in Niko and Dorian will provide me with a good benchmark, as well as help me to quickly get to grips with the car and the category,” he said.
Palmer follows in the footsteps of father Jonathan and brother Jolyon, who both raced in F1 junior categories in their careers.
Jonathan won the 1983 Formula 2 championship, while Jolyon was champion of GP2 in 2014.
The news leaves just one seat on the GP3 grid, in Trident’s team, to be filled ahead of the season beginning on May 11-13 at Barcelona.
