Hamilton wins in Baku after late race drama

Lewis Hamilton won the 2018 Azerbaijan Grand Prix after Mercedes team-mate Valtteri Bottas had a tyre failure in the lead during the final few laps.

Hamilton was third when the race restarted with four laps to go after the two Red Bull Racing drivers collided.

He was able to pass Sebastian Vettel after the German locked up braking for Turn 1 when battling Bottas for the lead.

Bottas looked to have the race victory in his grasp but suffered a rear tyre failure after running over car debris on the main straight one lap later.

Hamilton was able to hold off Kimi Raikkonen behind to gain a race win that looked unlikely until the final few laps. It was his first Formula 1 victory since the United States Grand Prix last year.

A major talking point of the race was the collision between Red Bull team-mates Daniel Ricciardo and Max Verstappen at the beginning of lap 40. Ricciardo crashed into the behind of his team-mate on the main straight when attempting to make a pass for fourth place.

The two drivers also made contact earlier in the race as they battled each other hard on track.

The resulting safety car stayed out for longer after Romain Grosjean crashed his Haas into the wall when warming his tyres.

Force India’s Sergio Perez made a move on Vettel for third place on lap 49. The Mexican was given a five-second time penalty earlier in the race for overtaking before the safety car line during the first half of the race, but served the penalty when he pitted during the second safety car.

Vettel, who started from pole position and led the race until his first pit stop half-way into the race, held on to fourth place.

Behind him was Carlos Sainz Jr for Renault, who passed the Sauber of Charles Leclerc for fifth place going into Turn 1 at the start of lap 49. The result was Leclerc’s first time scoring points in F1 and Sauber’s best result since Felipe Nasr finished sixth in the 2015 Russian Grand Prix.

Fernando Alonso was able to finish seventh after both his right-sided wheels were punctured on the opening lap of the race.

Lance Stroll picked up Williams’ first points of the season after finished eighth ahead of McLaren’s Stoffel Vandoorne, who was 15th and last when the race restarted with four laps to go.

Brendon Hartley also scored his first points in F1 with finishing in 10th place.

Marcus Ericsson, Pierre Gasly and Kevin Magnussen were the only other three drivers to finish the race in 11th, 12th and 13th respectively.
