Ott Tanak leads Rally Sweden after the first stage, with championship leader Sebastien Ogier only able to set the ninth fastest time of the evening.
Tanak gained time at the beginning of the stage by running out of the tracks of the earlier competitors and made good use of the loose snow.
0.3 seconds behind, Jari-Matti Latvala made it a Toyota one-two but the four-time Rally Sweden winner felt he could have done better on the Karlstad stage.
Mads Ostberg set the third quickest time on his first run for Citroen in two years, with only very limited testing in the car in preparation for the event.
Kris Meeke was fourth quickest, ahead of the Hyundai trio of Andreas Mikkelsen, shakedown pacesetter Thierry Neuville and returnee Haydon Paddon.
Both Esapekka Lappi and Ogier went wide and got caught out by the slippery snow, with their costly mistakes leaving them in eighth and ninth. Craig Breen rounds out the top 10.
Elfyn Evans finished outside of the top 10, with a possible reoccurrence of an electrical issue from the morning’s shakedown session.
The 19-stage rally continues tomorrow, with the stages taking them into both Sweden and Norway.
