Race-winner Hughes makes 2018 GP3 return

GP3 race-winner Jake Hughes is returning to the series in 2018 with ART to partner Callum Ilott and Nikita Mazepin.

Hughes moves over to the category after racing with Hitech GP in European Formula 3 last season, ending the year in fifth in the drivers’ standings with a Nurburgring victory.

He spent one campaign in GP3 in 2016, winning twice for DAMS at Germany and Abu Dhabi.

The Midlander remains the last person to not race for ART to claim a pole position when he started at the front of the field at Barcelona that year.

“I’m very proud and excited to be joining a team as successful as ART for a crack at GP3,” Hughes said.

“When the opportunity came about to be able to jump in one of their cars for 2018 it was impossible to say no.

“I tested for three days with everyone in Abu Dhabi and felt immediately confident in and out of the car.”

Team manager Sebastien Philippe added more praise about Hughes’ recent driving.

“ART has followed Jake’s progress for several years and he has continued to impress us,” Philippe said.

“Last year, he was the spearhead of Hitech in F3, with whom we have been collaborating with for several years, and we are happy to give him a second chance in GP3.

“Jake is a great talent who only wants to express himself fully and ART can rely on him to help the team retain its titles.”

Hughes is the fifth driver to be named as a 2018 GP3 racer following Finnish duo Simo Laaksonen (Campos) and Niko Kari (MP).
