Carlos Munoz has announced that he will compete at the 2018 Indianapolis 500 with Andretti Autosport.
The Colombian will be in the sixth Andretti-Honda car fielded at Indianapolis Motor Speedway; joining Ryan Hunter-Reay, Alexander Rossi, Marco Andretti, Zach Veach, and Stefan Wilson. With the Andretti and Wilson being fielded in partnerships with Andretti.
Munoz drove for AJ Foyt’s team in 2017, but has spent the bulk of his IndyCar career with Andretti. After making his debut in the 2013 Indy 500; Munoz raced for the team on a full time basis from 2014 until 2016.
He has a solid track record in the event, having twice taken the runner-up spot; including back in his debut IndyCar race in 2013. With Takuma Sato having won last year’s 500, a third such success for Michael Andretti’s team in the last four years; Munoz will have a strong chance of challenging at the front.
“I am very excited to be a part of Andretti Autosport again,” Munoz told INDYCAR. “The team has been like family to me since Day 1, when I joined them five years ago to race Indy Lights. We have been so close to winning the Indy 500 – twice with the team – so I am especially excited to be back for that race and hopefully we will have a good result this year.”
With Munoz having taken a number of podiums in his 70 IndyCar races, including a single victory in Detroit in 2015; the team is also expecting Munoz to run near the front.
“We’re thrilled to have Carlos back in an Andretti car for the Indy 500,” said team CEO Michael Andretti. “There is no denying that Carlos has talent at (Indianapolis Motor Speedway), he’s finished runner-up twice and that has fueled his determination to get to victory lane. He has already built relationships with his teammates and many of those on our crew, so it should be a seamless process for our six cars when they head out for the first time together.”
The race, being run for the 102nd time, will be held on the 27th of May.
