Kubica Still in the Fight for Williams Seat, Claims Father

Robert Kubica is still in the running to take the second drive at Williams for the 2018 Formula 1 season, according to Kubica‘s father despite rumours Sergey Sirotkin has signed a contract with the team.

“We’re still fighting to get Robert into Williams,” Artur Kubica told Sportawe Fakty.

“We are taking steps to convince them to believe in Robert.”

Upon discussing the decision to be made by Williams, Kubica Sr. added: “If it is not made before Christmas, it means that at least the people at Williams are taking time to think.”

Both Kubica and his challenger for the vacant seat Sirotkin tested for the team during the post-season tyre test in Abu Dhabi last month.

Recent rumours have spread regarding an apparent deal already having been signed by Sirotkin, with the Russian supposedly bringing an estimated £15 million to the Grove outfit.

22-year-old Sirotkin served as Renault’s reserve driver in 2017, after finishing third in the drivers’ championship in his second year in GP2.

The Abu Dhabi test was not the first time Kubica and Sirotkin tested together in 2017, with the pair running for Renault in the mid-season test at the Hungaroring.

Williams has confirmed that there will be no formal announcements regarding its driver line-up for the upcoming season until the new year, however, Sirotkin reportedly remains the favourite for now.

The 2018 Formula 1 season is set to get underway on March 25 at Albert Park for the Australian Grand Prix.
