Jaguar Racing driver Mitch Evans improved on his early morning performance by topping the second free practice session in Hong Kong.
Evans was second fastest in the first free practice session of the day behind Sebastien Buemi and set a late lap to put himself on top of the second.
Reigning champion Lucas di Grassi had spent most of the session on top, with the top half of the order remaining almost entirely unchanged throughout.
In the final minute this changed, thanks to a track clear of yellow flags, with Evans and Daniel Abt, team-mate to di Grassi at Audi Sport ABT Schaeffler, beating the Brazilian’s early benchmark.
NIO driver Oliver Turvey was fourth fastest, with Mahindra’s Nick Heidfeld the only other driver to end the session within half a second of the pace set by Evans.
DS Virgin’s Sam Bird was sixth, ahead of new Jaguar signing Nelson Piquet Jr and Felix Rosenqvist, whose Mahindra team worked quickly to repair the steering damage he bestowed upon his car after a brush with the barriers in the first free practice session.
Nicolas Prost was the lead Renault e.dams driver in ninth, with team-mate Sebastien Buemi 19th after an early off at Turn 6 that damaged his steering.
MS Amlin Andretti driver Antonio Felix da Costa was 10th fastest.
Most of the action came with five-and-a-half minutes to go when Venturi debutant Edoardo Mortara stopped on the track, and NIO’s Luca Filippi misjudged one of the right-handers. This brought out the yellow flags, which were not fully removed until the very end of the session.
