F1 set to launch new logo after Abu Dhabi GP

Formula 1 is set to change its iconic logo with an unveiling of a new design on the podium at this weekend’s Abu Dhabi Grand Prix.

F1’s owners Liberty Media has opted to give the sport a fresh look from next year, as they continue to stamp their identity on the racing series following their takeover at the beginning of 2017.

It was revealed that three innovative designs had been sent to the European Union Intellectual Property, one of the three will be chosen as F1’s new logo from the start of 2018.

The current logo, which has been used since 1994, is famous for its red and black lettering revealing a number 1 in the middle of the logo.

F1 CEO Chase Carey says a new look is a good way for Liberty to display the “fresh energy” they are bringing to F1, but understands that not everyone is going to approve of the change.

“For sure, any time you change you are always going to get a mixed set of views,” Carey said. “What we wanted to do was provide a fresh energy to the sport, and I think have a lot of plans for the future and a lot of things we want to do.

“We thought the logo was a good way to emphasise the excitement and a fresh energy to take the sport to a new place.

“That’s respecting where the sport has been, we are not looking to change the sport, we are looking to provide a fresh innovation and energy to a sport that is a great sport.

“We think we can enhance it and better it, to allow fans to engage in ways they maybe haven’t had the opportunity to in the past around events that truly are the spectacle they should be.”
