Nissan announces season five Formula E entry

Nissan will enter the fifth season of Formula E in late 2018, the first Japanese manufacturer to commit to the electric championship.

The entry is to provide a global platform for ‘Nissan Intelligent Mobility’, its strategy in redefining how vehicles are driven, powered and integrated into society.

Their entry will replace a current manufacturer, highly likely to be Renault, and will keep the grid to 18 cars for season five. Despite the expectant withdrawal of the Renault brand, the company will still work with Renault to leverage their expertise and development gained over the last three seasons.

“To have a name like Nissan coming on board is a momentous day for the series,” said FE CEO Alejandro Agag.

“Not only is it great to welcome a new manufacturer to the Formula E family – it’s great to see our first Japanese manufacturer entering the frame, showing truly how global the electric revolution is.

“Japan is a country at the forefront of new technologies, with one of the biggest followings of Formula E. The shift toward sustainable mobility is in motion, and it’s unstoppable. I look forward to seeing the Nissan logo adorned on the new-look cars for season five.”

Nissan follows a number of household automotive brands entering the championship including BMW, Audi, Porsche and Mercedes as a shift towards electric cars gather momentum with consumers on the road.
