In a season which has already been a record-breaking campaign for Lewis Hamilton, the Brit can celebrate a decade in Formula 1 in style this weekend in Austin with a fourth World Championship in his sights.
With Sebastien Vettel faltering in recent races, Hamilton has one hand on the 2017 title as we enter the home straight.
The USA Grand Prix is the first of four races to close out the season and Hamilton knows that with his near insurmountable lead in the Driver’s Championship, he just needs to safely get his car home.
Sitting 59 points clear of Vettel heading into Austin, Hamilton just needs to accumulate 16 points more than Vettel in order to secure a historic fourth world title.
To clinch it this weekend, Hamilton needs to win the race and Vettel to finish sixth or lower, while a runners-up spot can also be good enough for Hamilton should the German finish in 10th or worse on Sunday afternoon. The 2017 season has already been a memorable one for the 32-year-old. His eight wins already have moved him closer to Michael Schumacher in the all-time race win standings while he also moved past the seven-time world champion in the pole charts, with Hamilton posting 10 pole positions in 16 races so far this season which takes his career tally to 61, the most ever by a single driver.
Already regarded as one of the best drivers to have ever lived, Hamilton is also on the verge of another bit of history.
Currently tied with Jackie Stewart with three world titles apiece, should Hamilton be able to finish the job in the final four races, he will become the most successful British driver of all-time with four world titles to his name, moving into an even more elite group of drivers to have won four or more world championships in their career along with Alain Prost, Juan Manuel Fangio, Schumacher and Vettel.
Even at 32, Hamilton still has many years ahead of him to perhaps even eclipse the achievements that Schumacher made in his illustrious career, as Jenson Button seems to think he will do, and it all starts at Austin where Hamilton can bolster his stock among the all-time greats of the sport.
