MP Motorsport replaces DAMS for 2018 GP3 season

Experienced junior category competitor MP Motorsport is entering GP3 for the 2018 season, replacing DAMS, which is focusing on its continued efforts in Formula E with Renault.

The Dutch squad will make its debut in the series in this year’s post-season tests in Abu Dhabi on November 30 to December 2.

MP expands its operations after spending five seasons in GP2/F2, claiming two wins, most recently being represented on the top step of the podium by Sergio Sette Camara at the sprint event at Spa.

It also has experience in the Formula Renault Eurocup 2.0 and the Spanish and Russian F4 championships, winning titles with Red Bull and Renault-backed Richard Verschoor and Christian Lundgaard.

“The expansion of FIA Formula E means that we need to concentrate more on this programme in the future,” DAMS team owner Jean-Paul Driot said.

“With manufacturer involvement growing, FE requires additional resources and the need for DAMS to strengthen its workforce.

“We have therefore decided to stop our GP3 Series operations at the end of the 2017 season.

“We are very happy to hand over the entry to MP and wish them a lot of success in the category.”

DAMS entered the third-tier series to Formula 1 in 2016, taking a surprise debut pole position at Barcelona with Jake Hughes, before the Midlander claimed two wins at Hockenheim and Abu Dhabi.

The French outfit finished fourth out of seven teams in the teams’ championship.

Its 2017 campaign has been a tougher affair, with it gathering just 24 points, helped by a best result of fourth by Dan Ticktum in the last feature event at Jerez.

The 2018 season is thought to be the final year of the category before the adoption of the International Formula 3 series in 2019.
