Aegerter stripped of Misano win, Luthi awarded five more points

Dominique Aegerter has been stripped of his Misano Moto2 win after the Kiefer team had been found to be using an illegal oil in qualifying, gifting Tom Luthi the victory and five extra points.

Swiss rider Aegerter brilliantly fended off Interwetten rider and countryman Luthi in treacherous conditions at Misano in September to secure his first win since 2014.

However, on the Saturday following qualifying, FIM technical checks found Aegerter‘s Kiefer machine had been running an oil not supplied by the championship’s official supplier.

A hearing was had at the Aragon round, where a second sample of oil was tested. The results once again came up positive for the illegal oil and Aegerter has since been disqualified from the event.

An FIM statement read: “On 9 September 2017 at postqualifying technical control after the Moto2 Qualifying Practice of the Gran Premio Tribul Mastercard Di San Marino E Della Riviera Di Rimini, you were found to be using an oil outside the FIM Moto2 specifications.

“You were summoned to attend a hearing with the FIM MotoGP Stewards Panel during the Grand Premio Movistar De Aragon. You attended the heading and acknowledged the facts presented and elected to have the B sample tested.

“The B sample test results were received, showing the same results as the A sample, with both samples failing to comply with the regulations.

“For the above reasons, the FIM MotoGP Stewards Panel has imposed upon you a disqualification from the results of the entire event.”

Aegerter‘s disqualification awards Luthi victory and five more points as a result. After struggling to 11th at the Japanese Grand Prix and slipping 24 points adrift of standings leader Franco Morbidelli, this change to the Misano results means Luthi‘s deficit stands at 19 points now.

Malaysian rider Hafizh Syahrin – who finished third at Motegi – has been promoted to second in the Misano results, while Sky VR46 rider Francesco Bagnaia has moved up to third.

This is not the first time this season a high profile rider has been stripped of a result due to running illegal oil, as Italtrans rider Mattia Pasini lost his secondplace finish from the Catalunya race.
