Vettel edges Red Bull duo for pole position in Singapore

Sebastian Vettel beat the Red Bull duo to claim his 49th career pole position and his fourth under the lights in Singapore.

Vettel, who lost the championship lead at the previous round at Monza to Lewis Hamilton, set a 1m39.491s, beating Max Verstappen by over three tenths.

Verstappen shaded Red Bull team-mate by just under 0.030s. Kimi Raikkonen could only manage fourth after a mistake on his second flying lap left him over half a second off team-mate Vettel.

The Mercedes duo of Lewis Hamilton and Valtteri Bottas were fifth and sixth fastest. Its historical struggle in Singapore continued.

Nico Hulkenberg beat Fernando Alonso to ‘best of the rest’ in seventh place. McLaren team-mate Stoffel Vandoorne shone in Q2 but could only manage ninth. Carlos Sainz Jr. rounded out the top 10.

Jolyon Palmer, who will be replaced by Sainz for 2018, couldn’t replicate his strong Q1 pace in the second qualifying session and will lineup 11th on Sunday.

Sergio Perez was left frustrated by his tyres of his second run in Q2, abandoning his final flying lap and settling for 12th, Daniil Kvyat was 13th quickest and said he was “fed up with this shit” over the team radio.

Perez’s team-mate Esteban Ocon was 14th ahead of Romain Grosjean who was slowest in Q2.

Kevin Magnussen was knocked out in Q1 for the third time in four races, with both Williams and both Saubers also failing to progress into the second stage of qualifying.

Felipe Massa damaged his right rear tyre when he hit the wall just before the pit entry. He still managed to out-qualify his Williams team-mate Lance Stroll by seven tenths.
