Rosberg joins Kubica’s management team to push for F1 return

2016 Formula 1 world champion Nico Rosberg has joined up with Robert Kubica’s management team to push the Pole towards a possible 2018 F1 return.

Through 2017, the 32-year-old driver has been pushing himself towards a return to F1 action through various tests with the Renault team, including a test of the current 2017 Renault at the in-season test in Hungary.

With Renault having taken the decision to sign Carlos Sainz Jr from Toro Rosso, Kubica has since left his short-term contract with the French manufacturer in order to find another team.

“It’s fantastic to be working on this with Nico,” Kubica told Motorsport.com. “We know each other since we were kids and he is, and will be, a great asset in my F1 comeback.”

There are very few 2018 seats available for Kubica, with Fernando Alonso set to re-sign for a McLaren team awaiting Renault power units in 2018, Toro Rosso is almost certain to take 2016 GP2 champion Pierre Gasly.

Force India is also yet to confirm their two drivers, however, despite the tensions between Sergio Perez and Esteban Ocon, both are also poised to remain with the Silverstone-based outfit.

The two biggest opportunities Kubica most likely lie within the Williams and Sauber teams, Felipe Massa is out of contract at Williams and both drivers at Sauber are currently unconfirmed. Current F2 championship leader Charles Leclerc is already linked with Sauber due to his connection to Ferrari.

Rosberg added: “Robert and Lewis are the fastest I ever raced against. Therefore, I am thrilled to join forces with Robert on his journey back to racing in Formula 1.”
