Wolff wants change in F1 weather systems

Mercedes boss Toto Wolff has expressed his displeasure with Formula 1’s weather monitoring systems, and has called for an upgrade.

At the beginning of the 2017 season, it was announced that Meteo France would be taking over from Ubi Met as F1’s official supplier.

However, at last weekend’s Italian Grand Prix at Monza, Meteo Frances systems got the weather predictions wrong.

“On Friday, it was supposed to rain all day — but it was sunny all day,” Wolff said to German media.

“And on Saturday, it was supposed to be dry,” he added, in reference to the treacherous Saturday Qualifying session.

Qualifying at Monza took over two hours due to an unexpected downpour that left the track covered in water.

The conditions saw Haas’ Romain Grosjean aquaplane and spin on the main straight, causing damage to his car so he could not compete in the remainder of the session.

Wolff also hinted that F1 should rely on a central weather system instead, in comparison to the past where teams individually used their own suppliers.

“Maybe we have to think about whether this is the right approach,” he said.

The next grand prix on the calendar is Singapore Grand Prix, which takes place on the 15th-17th September.
