Di Giannantonio leads Gresini one-two on Friday at Misano

Fabio Di Giannantonio ended the opening day Moto3 practice for the San Marino Grand Prix fastest from his Gresini team-mate Jorge Martin.

The opening session of the day got underway on a damp track, with only a limited number of laps completed on slick tyres in the closing minutes.

Mercifully, the afternoon session was bone dry, and Martin wasted no time in getting laps under his belt in the vastly better conditions.

Opting to sit out first practice to avoid taking any unnecessary risks with his ankle injury, Martin was the early pacesetter with a 1m44.230s – the best lap of the weekend at that moment.

His time at the top of the timesheets was short lived, with Romano Fenati soon taking over with a 1m44.159s, before improving to a 1m43.096s.

The Marinelli Rivacold rider’s time came under little threat as the clock counted down, though he was finely deposed by Enea Bastianini with a 1m42.789s.

The 2015 Misano race winner’s time at the top did not last long as compatriot Di Giannantonio fired in a 1m42.620s to go fastest, with team-mate Martin slotting into second by just 0.071 seconds.

Gabriel Rodrigo had a fairly quiet morning in the iffy conditions, but sprung into life this afternoon with the fourth fastest time of the day. Fenati completed the top five.

British Grand Prix winner Aron Canet was six tenths off the pace in sixth ahead of championship leader Joan Mir and Marcos Ramirez. Home riders Niccolo Antonelli and Marco Bezzecchi completed the top 10.

Livio Loi ended the day just four tenths from his Leopard team-mate, albeit down in 11th, with Nicolo Bulega close behind in 12th ahead of Tatsuki Suzuki, Bo Bendsneyder and Adam Norrodin.

Misano wildcard Kevn Zannoni impressed on Friday, the Althea rider running as high as ninth at one stage. Though shuffled back to 17th after the final flurry of laps, the Italian was only 0.013s slower than Mugello race winner Andrea Migno.

John McPhee was involved in a collision with a car while out cycling in Scotland last week, suffering an injury to his hip. He ended the day 18th, 1.2s from top spot.
