Sebastian Vettel is at a loss as to why his Ferrari team were so far off the pace in the soaking wet qualifying session at Monza.
After looking to be close to both Mercedes cars on Friday, Vettel could only manage the eighth fastest time in qualifying – behind his team-mate Raikkonen, Lance Stroll and Esteban Ocon.
The German told the media: “Clearly we couldn’t go the same pace.”
“At this stage, we don’t know why, I’m sure there’s a couple of things we’ll look into and try to understand.”
Kimi Raikkonen was also off the pace, something Vettel alluded to.
“We were just not quick enough today, both of us, struggling, I guess, and not being able to do the same as other people are doing.”
The Finn added: “We are not fast enough. From my car, I don’t know about the other car, but I struggle a lot with the grip.”
“Either we didn’t make the tyres work, or whatever it is, it’s very slippery.”
Both Ferraris will be elevated two places after the Red Bull duo take their power unit grid penalties, but they will have a lot of work to do to catch and pass any of the four Mercedes powered cars that start in front of them.
