Away from the front of the field this season, there has been an even tighter battle between the teams to become the ‘best of the rest’. It has become clear though, despite the performance of the car, the barometer of success is often the form of their second driver.
The final championship position of many of these teams is vitally important, with often a small number of points determining the prize money for the following season. A strong driver paring, who are consistently able to score points could mean a difference of several million pounds to the team, which in some cases, could force them to acquire a pay driver for the following season, or find additional investment.
I wrote about the ‘second drivers’ earlier in the season, with initially Williams and Renault being held back by subpar performances. Has anything changed as we head into the second half of the year?
