Sauber could be become a Ferrari junior team following confirmation they will continue to use Ferrari engines next season.
Earlier this season, former Sauber team principal Monisha Kaltenborn confirmed the team would have a supply of the current specification Honda engines for 2018.
Following the departure of Kaltenborn, the Honda deal was reassessed by incoming team principal Frederic Vasseur. At the end of last week it was announced Honda had been dropped, shortly afterwards the conformation they would have a supply of the latest specification Ferrari engines for next season.
Ferrari’s young drivers, Charles Leclerc and Antonio Giovinazzi could form part of the engine deal, later revealed by Vasseur and backed up by Ferrari president Sergio Marchionne over the Hungarian Grand Prix weekend.
Autosport asked Marchionne, who was present in Hungary if Sauber could become a home for their young driver programme, he replied: “It is an excellent idea and something we are working on.
“We need space because we have a couple of young drivers that are exceptional.
“We need to find a place to lay the foundations for the Scuderia Ferrari of tomorrow.”
Such a deal could also pave the way for a return for Alfa Romeo, suggested recently by James Allen to rebadge the Ferrari engine, as a brand to promote young drivers.
A possible option for Ferrari a backed driver recently closed, with closely aligned Haas confirming an unchanged driver pairing of Romain Grosjean and Kevin Magnussen for next season.
