Ferrari junior Alesi claims second GP3 win amid tyre failures

Ferrari Formula 1 junior – and son of ex-F1 driver Jean – Giuliano Alesi has claimed his second GP3 sprint race victory of 2017 at the Hungaroring.

The Frenchman led all 17 laps to front a Trident 1-2-3-4 – the team’s best-ever result in a race – finishing ahead of Ryan Tveter by 0.6 seconds.

Kevin Joerg followed Tveter in taking a maiden podium in third ahead of Dorian Boccolacci.

Pirelli will be asked questions after the race was changed by many punctures that dramatically ruined chances for points-scoring finishes.

Alessio Lorandi, Jack Aitken and Julien Falchero all suffered right rear failures while in the top-10 which ended their day.

Honda-backed Nirei Fukuzumi retired from the race after the first lap after an early incident with Arden’s Leonardo Pulcini.

Fukuzumi spun at Turn 3, also sustaining a right rear puncture, while Pulcini took severe front wing damage.

As a result, Anthoine Hubert was the only ART driver to finish in the points in fifth above Red Bull-backed Niko Kari and Raoul Hyman.

Hubert continues his run of ending every race in eighth or better, now the only competitor on the grid to achieve this feat.

Marcos Siebert completed the points finishers in eighth, finishing one second ahead of Haas development driver Arjun Maini.

Mercedes protege George Russell initially made his way into the points positions after starting 19th but had drama as Aitken suffered his problem, going off track, and falling to 12th after a pitstop.

Sauber’s Tatiana Calderon was the final driver to complete the race in 13th, one lap down.
