Aitken sets record Hungarian GP3 pole time

Renault academy driver Jack Aitken has taken pole position for GP3’s Hungarian feature race, setting a new record lap time.

Aitken found a time of 1m31.754s to top the timesheets ahead of Mercedes protege George Russell by 0.182s.

This dominantly beats the previous record set by Koiranen GP’s Aaro Vainio in 2013, a 1m32.811s.

Honda-backed Nirei Fukuzumi completed an ART 1-2-3 in third, with Trident’s Dorian Boccolacci fourth.

Boccolacci continues his record of qualifying in the top five in every qualifying session so far in 2017.

Championship leader Russell’s closest battler in the title hunt, Anthoine Hubert, who is 35 points behind the Brit, is set to start fifth.

Ferrari junior Giuliano Alesi – son of ex-F1 driver Jean – is sixth on the grid, with Red Bull’s Niko Kari seventh and Kevin Joerg eighth.

Alessio Lorandi and Sauber’s development driver Tatiana Calderon completed the top-10, with Calderon 0.984s behind Aitken’s time.

Calderon is the first DAMS driver to enter one of the 10 fastest times in qualifying in 2017.

Haas’ development racer Arjun Maini finished 13th.

GP3 qualifying debutant Matthieu Vaxiviere ended 19th and last, 1.861s adrift of the pole lap.
