Sauber continue partnership with Ferrari after collapse of Honda deal

In the wake of the Sauber F1 team cancelling their proposed deal with Honda for 2018, the team have announced today they will continue using Ferrari power.

The collaboration between Sauber and Ferrari dates back 20 years to 1997. Barring a four-year spell with BMW between 2006-09, Sauber has used Ferrari engines every year since.

Sauber will also use the latest specification power unit from 2018 which will be a boost to the team’s chances of moving further up the grid.

Rumours with regards to the driver market for next season will also kick into another gear with Ferrari academy driver Charles Leclerc performing at a very high level, there could be a potential move to Sauber next season as part of the deal.

Sauber team principal Frédéric Vasseur said: “I am very pleased to confirm that we will continue to work with Scuderia Ferrari as our engine supplier in form of a multi-year agreement.

“The shared experience between the Sauber F1 Team and Ferrari has built a strong foundation, which will allow us to move forward swiftly and efficiently, also in terms of the development of the 2018 car.

“I am convinced that together we can achieve the results which reflect the passion and determination that is, and always has been, behind the Sauber F1 Team.”
