Red Bull boss Christian Horner says he expects Daniil Kvyat to be retained alongside Carlos Sainz at Toro Rosso for the 2018 Formula 1 season.
After being dropped by Red Bull mid-way through the 2016 season, many expected Kvyat to be dropped in favour of reigning GP2 Series champion Pierre Gasly, however, the Russian was given another chance to prove himself.
While Kvyat has scored fewer points than Sauber’s Pascal Wehrlein in 2017, he has often been on the pace of team-mate Carlos Sainz.
Speaking after the race in Austria, where Kvyat was responsible for the first corner incident which resulted in the retirement of Fernando Alonso and Max Verstappen, Horner believed Kvyat’s contract with the team would be renewed in the near future.
“Not yet. I can’t see a scenario where it won’t,” Horner replied when asked whether Kvyat’s contract has been taken up for next season. “He’s actually driven a pretty sensible season so far, the likelihood it will be taken up in the relatively near future.”
Horner also confirmed Sainz would definitely be remaining with the team.
“He knows the option has been taken on his contract to be nominated as a Toro Rosso driver for next year.”
