Kubica to be ‘extensively evaluated’ in a second test

Robert Kubica will take to the wheel of the 2012 Renault E20 for a second time to be ‘extensively evaluated’ after his first Formula 1 test with the team last month.

On June 7 Kubica drove around the Ricardo Tormo circuit in Spain completing 115 laps; this included a full race simulation, qualifying runs, as well as other different programmes.

At the time Kubica spoke of his ’emotional’ run after spending such a long a long time away from F1 due to his rallying accident in Andorra, believing he had found something of his ‘old self’ whilst behind the wheel.

Ever since the test speculation has risen dramatically as to whether the Pole could make a full-time return to the grid, this is partly due down to the poor form shown by current race driver Jolyon Palmer, who has yet to score a point in his 2017 campaign.

The former BMW and Renault driver does believe he has a very high chance of being able to succeed in putting himself in the frame for an incredible comeback should things work in his favour.

Cyril Abiteboul, Renault’s managing director said: “Whilst the first day of testing at Valencia was no more than to let Robert get reacquainted with the feel of driving again, this second test will be to assess his capabilities to return to the highest level of competition.

“This is a new phase in his personal and professional journey and we are proud to support him in the form of lending our infrastructure at Paul Ricard that is suitable for professional and non-professional drivers.

“There are still many hurdles for him to overcome, and he knows better than anyone else that only his performance will determine if he can one day return to being a professional driver.”
