Lewis Hamilton has stated he wants to win the Formula 1 world championship ‘the right way’ after the controversial clash with Ferrari’s Sebastian Vettel in Baku.
In what was previously a ‘respectful’ rivalry prior to the events of the Azerbaijan Grand Prix, the three-time world champion has refused to get into a war of words with Vettel, even refusing to talk to the Ferrari driver. Stating clearly he wants to do all of his talking on the race track.
Hamilton said: “Personally, I want to do my talking on the track and win this championship in the right way. More than ever after this weekend, I believe we can.
“But we know that when times get tough, true colours show, and we have managed to apply some good pressure in the last weeks.
“We’ll pull together and move forwards. I’m proud of my performance and I hope we can take the speed we’ve shown this weekend forward.”
The 32-year old is a passionate advocate of grassroots racing, he also believes the antics Vettel displayed in the race shine a poor light on him as a driver, stating they should be setting a much better example to the next generation.
Hamilton added: “All the young kids in other series look up to us, as champions, to set an example and that is not the behaviour you expect to see from a multiple champion.”
It is reported Vettel could face a hearing in front of the FIA for his actions against Hamilton. The German recently ran into problems with the governing body after slamming race director Charlie Whiting over the radio at last season’s Mexican Grand Prix.
