Ferrari Formula 1 junior Charles Leclerc took his fourth straight Formula 2 pole position in a session littered with red flags.
Leclerc set a 1m52.129s to extend his championship advantage to seven points over DAMS’ Oliver Rowland, who qualified down in ninth place.
Luca Ghiotto slid into the barriers at Turn 15 bringing out the red flags with just under 21 minutes to go. The session resumed before another red flag was brought out almost immediately for debris.
ART Grand Prix’s Nobuharu Matsushita was fastest before the duo of red flags, however, he was eventually beaten to P1 by over half a second by the Monegasque driver.
Nicholas Latifi was an excellent third ahead of Nyck de Vries who enjoyed another strong qualifying session.
Rounding out the top five was Artem Markelov, his fastest time was just over a second shy of Leclerc’s best effort.
Leclerc’s team-mate Antonio Fuoco was sixth quickest with veterans Johnny Cecotto Jr. and Sergio Canamasas rounding out the top eight.
Rowland struggled to ninth with braking issues ahead of Robert Visoiu who had his best Friday of the year so far.
Series returnee Sergey Sirotkin could only manage 17th with multiple traffic issues throughout the session.
