Lewis Hamilton has matched Ayrton Senna’s pole position tally of 65 with an outstanding pole position lap at the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve.
Sebastian Vettel will start second after missing out on pole position initially by just 0.004s.
An indication of how strong Hamilton’s lap was the sizeable gap to Mercedes team-mate Valtteri Bottas at a mammoth 0.7s.
Bottas and Kimi Raikkonen share the second row in third and fourth respectively, with both Red Bulls just behind, Max Verstappen leading Daniel Ricciardo.
Felipe Massa was best of the rest in seventh ahead of Sergio Perez, Esteban Ocon and Nico Hulkenberg.
Daniil Kvyat failed to make it into Q3 along with team-mate Carlos Sainz, who spun at Turn 1 and will start 13th. Fernando Alonso, Romain Grosjean and Jolyon Palmer all failed to make it into the pole position shootout.
Pascal Wehrlein was outqualified by team-mate Marcus Ericsson for the first time this season. The German spun at Turn 1 after dipping his front right wheel on the grass. This resulted in double waved yellow flags meaning his midfield competitors could not improve on their initial efforts.
Stoffel Vandoorne, Lance Stroll, Kevin Magnussen and the two Saubers all failed to progress into Q1 and will line-up from 16th to 20th.
