Di Grassi takes pole ahead of Berlin ePrix

Lucas di Grassi took his second pole position of the 2016/17 Formula E season by only 0.001s over Jose Maria Lopez in Berlin.

The gap between the Abt Audi Sport and DS Virgin Racing drivers is now the narrowest margin for pole position in Formula E history. Di Grassi’s championship rival Sebastien Buemi will start the race down in 14th.

Felix Rosenqvist looked like he would be able to take pole position after being fastest in the first two sector, but a slow final sector put him in third. His team-mate at Mahindra Nick Heidfeld will start alongside him in fourth, while Sam Bird’s disappointing super pole lap puts him in fifth.

Bird was the fastest driver in the first group, his lap being just under 0.3s faster than Abt’s attempt in his Abt Audi Sport car. Antonio Felix da Costa was nearly three seconds off the pace, and will start last.

No one from the second group got through to super pole, although Vergne was knocked out by the last driver to set their first qualifying lap. The 27-year-old said after his qualifying attempt that one of his cars had an engine issue that needed to be fixed before the race.

While Bird’s lap was impressive, Rosenqvist was able to go 0.15s faster than everyone else in qualifying to get his Mahindra car into the final group. Mitch Evans was only able to finish 15th, although he brushed the wall on his fast lap.

Although he was fastest in the first practice session, the change in temperatures affected the Renault e.dams team. Buemi wasn’t able to get near super pole in Q4, while his team-mate Prost found himself in ninth.

Oliver Turvey will start in seventh while his NextEV team-mate Nelson Piquet Jr. will start 13th alongside Buemi.

Daniel Abt will not be too far from his Abt Audi Sport team-mate on the grid, he will be starting eighth. Jerome d’Ambrosio rounds off the top 10, an improvement over his positions in both the practice sessions.

Maro Engel qualified in 11th place, four places behind his new Venturi team-mate Tom Dillmann.

In his first ePrix with Techeetah, Stephane Sarrazin managed 12th position, lower down the grid than he was during the second practice session.

Jaguar Racing and Andretti Autosport both find their drivers in the bottom five. Evans and Carroll are split by Andretti’s Robin Frijns, while Antonio Felix da Costa was off the pace and will start from the back of the grid.
