Bird: We need to be aiming for the top five

Sam Bird says that the team need to aim to finish in the top five tomorrow after falling down the grid during the first of two races in Berlin.

The 30-year-old qualified fifth for the race, but fell down the order during the race. He finished in seventh after Sebastien Buemi was disqualified later due to illegal tyre pressures.

“It would be tough,” Bird commented after the race, “but we need to be aiming for the top five tomorrow because we could have been in the top five today.

“Tomorrow’s going to be even tougher. Qualifying’s going to be tougher but then the race is longer.”

The first race in the double-header weekend at Berlin lasted for 44 laps. Tomorrow the 20 drivers will be racing for 46 laps.

Bird said that DS Virgin Racing seem to be not as strong with saving energy in their cars compared to the likes of Renault e.dams and Mahindra.

“It was difficult. It looks like the Mahindras and the two Renault powertrain cars and the Abt cars are maybe a little bit better than us at the moment. So that makes tomorrow quite difficult.”

Bird’s team-mate Jose Maria Lopez finished in fourth place after qualifying in second. The Argentine was beaten to pole position by Lucas di Grassi by 0.001s.
