Matia Pasini has won the Italian Moto2 race at Mugello, his first since 2009 and his first in the intermediate class.
Many would have doubted the Italian. However, he rode a storming race, including a last lap masterclass in overtaking that saw him pass Alex Marquez and Tom Luthi to take the race win.
Pasini led in the early laps, with the leading pack behind him. Lorenzo Baldasarri had a high side, taking out Takaaki Nakagami at the final turn. The two riders were unhurt, with Baldasarri going to apologise later on.

At the front, three riders were asserting their dominance. Pasini, Marquez and Luthi all had the pace to win it going into the final lap. Luthi took the lead on the first corner, putting Pasini wide. The Italian looked done and dusted, before passing both riders on the next few corners to take the lead yet again. This would be enough for the Italian to take the chequered flag and his first Moto2 victory.
Tom Luthi was second, whilst Alex Marquez was third. Championship leader Franco Morbidelli could only manage fourth after starting on pole. Miguel Oliveria was fifth.
Luca Marini crossed the line sixth with Dominique Aegerter not far behind. Simone Corsi was eighth, with Jorge Navarro and Brad Binder finishing ninth and tenth.
The Moto2 world championship continues to give us exciting action. The riders return next week at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya for the Catalan GP.
