Sebastian Vettel and Kimi Raikkonen will line-up on the front row of the grid for tomorrow’s Russian Grand Prix which will be Ferrari’s first front row start since 2008.
In what was a dramatic qualifying session, a late lap from Vettel saw him take Ferrari’s first pole since the 2015 Singapore Grand Prix.
Raikkonen was fastest after the first runs in Q3 but was unable to better that time and will line-up a season best of second on the grid.
Valtteri Bottas continued his 100% record at Sochi over his team-mates, qualifying within a tenth of Vettel and well clear of Lewis Hamilton in fourth.
Daniel Ricciardo was 1.711s away from Vettel’s time in fifth ahead of Williams’ Felipe Massa and Red Bull team-mate Max Verstappen.
Nico Hulkenberg qualified ahead of both Force Indias, Sergio Perez once again ahead of Esteban Ocon in ninth and tenth respectively.
Both Toro Rossos failed to make it into Q3 with Lance Stroll splitting Carlos Sainz and Daniil Kvyat after making a mistake in the final sector on his final run.
Kevin Magnussen will start 14th ahead of Fernando Alonso, who made it into Q3 but was 3.3 seconds off Bottas’ benchmark in Q2
Jolyon Palmer was comprehensively beaten by team-mate Hulkenberg once again and crashed at Turn 4 with the chequered flag already out compromising other drivers’ last runs in Q1. Stoffel Vandoorne also failed to make it in Q2 while Alonso progressed.
Pascal Wehrlein made a mistake on his final run in Q1 but out-qualified team-mate Marcus Ericsson once again.
Romain Grosjean will line-up in 20th as he continued to struggle with the balance of his Haas.
