Hamilton claims fifth Chinese GP victory

Lewis Hamilton claimed a fifth victory at the Chinese Grand Prix in what was a comfortable afternoon for the Mercedes driver in tricky, changeable conditions.

Hamilton maintained the lead off the start from pole position and controlled the race from the front showing Mercedes had the strongest race pace this weekend.

The Briton was assisted by Sebastian Vettel falling behind both Red Bulls and team-mate Kimi Raikkonen, who he was unable to pass for several laps.

Vettel recovered to second, passing Raikkonen, Daniel Ricciardo and Max Verstappen within a couple of laps but he was unable to put any serious pressure on race leader Hamilton.

Vettel finished a comfortable second but our attention quickly turned to the final podium spot which went down to the final laps of the race.

Verstappen, who started down in 16th, made a blistering start and was within the top 10 on the opening lap. The Dutchman overtook team-mate Ricciardo at Turn 6 and kept him behind in the latter stages for the final place on the podium. Raikkonen was just behind in fifth.

Valtteri Bottas finished down in sixth after spinning under the safety car while warming his tyres, recovering from 12th.

Carlos Sainz was the only man to start on the slick tyres while the rest of the field opted for the intermediate and ultimately it proved to be the correct decision, jumping his midfield competitors. The Spaniard had strong pace and finished seventh.

Kevin Magnussen enjoyed a strong resurgence after a difficult season opener, coming home eighth ahead of the Force India duo of Sergio Perez and Esteban Ocon.
