Baldassarri takes early lead in Argentina

Forward Racing’s Lorenzo Baldassarri was in fine form in the first Moto2 session in Argentina, taking first position by two tenths of a second.

Italian Baldassarri took first by 0.224 seconds, setting that lap on the harder rear Dunlop tyre and giving him a good advantage going into this weekend’s action.

Qatar race winner Franco Morbidelli looked to be in control, spending the majority of FP1 in the top spot. However, Baldassarri beat the Marc VDS rider to first, and left the Italian down in second place.

Tom Luthi was third, with fellow countryman Dominique Aegerter in fourth on the Kiefer Racing Suter. Marcel Schrotter made it two Suter chassis in the top five at the end of the session in fifth, with Remy Gardner having an impressive run on the Tech 3 machine to end up in sixth position.

Mattia Pasini was seventh, with Alex Marquez in eighth. Marquez did fall during the session at Turn 3. He was able to get up though after the high-speed incident. Sandro Cortese and Hafizh Syahrin finished in ninth and tenth respectively.

Moto2 Free practice 2 gets underway at 19:05 BST at the Termas de Rio Hondo Circuit.
